Dr Matthias Ummenhofer kicked off his career in academia. He achieved Bachelor of Science in Engineering and Business Economics, followed by International Finance and Economics Master of Science at the University Aix-Marseille II, where he then also pursued postgraduate studies in Transport Economics and Logistics Management. At Aix-Marseille II, he founded CRET-LOG consultancy service and applied research in the field of Logistics Technology Integration and Process Engineering. In 1997 Matthias joined European Investment Bank’s (EIB) in its Transport Economist Project Financing Directorate. Following this post he moved for one year to advise a member of Executive Board where he was involved in project financing transactions in the infrastructure sector. In 2000 Matthias joined European Investment Fund (EIF), after its restructuring, and he has been responsible for Equity Fund Investments giving him direct responsibility for a portfolio of over 30 funds with an amount of total commitments in excess of EUR 400m.
At present he acts as the Head of Venture Capital at the EIF where he leads EIF’s Venture Capital operations. He also focuses on business development and shaping EIF’s strategy in the early stage technology market and innovation and entrepreneurship financing. Matthias has been involved in European Young Innovators Forum since early 2012. At Young Innovators Unconvention 2012 he was the Chair of the Judges Panel at European Young Innovator of the Year 2012 Awards. You could have also met Matthias during other EYIF’s events; he was one of the panelists at Innovation Roundtable in the European Parliament in November 2012 and he will feature multiple EYIF’s activities 2013.
